The average gestation for and alpaca is right around 11 to 11 ½ months some can go as long as a full year. An alpaca baby is called a cria and can weigh between 14 to 18 pounds on the average. On the Alto Plano it is critical that the cria is up and nursing as soon as possible to get the much needed colustrom to boost the immune system. They are usually up and running around with in 2 hours so they will be able to avoid any predators. For this reason a normal birth will happen between 10 am and 2 pm.
