Alpacas did originate in South American (Webster had that part right!). Chili, Bolivia and Peru, high in the Andes, is where they all, at one time, called home. The high altitude of this area (11,500 – 16,400 feet above sea level) makes them hardy animals, which easily adapt to conditions elsewhere in the world. In 1983, the first alpacas were imported into the United States from South America, and today can be found all over the world.
